For New Year's Eve, from 31 December 2023 to 1 January 2024, Evolution Prop Shop transformed areas of Bab Al Shams in Dubai with a distinctive desert-meets-disco decorative concept, combining the warmth and character of the resort's desert setting with reflective metallic finishes and playful disco-inspired details.

The Challenge

The creative direction required two contrasting aesthetics to work as one: the natural, understated character of the desert setting and the high-energy visual language associated with disco and New Year's Eve.

The Challenge

Transforming a contemporary residential setting into a convincing Halloween environment required more than placing individual horror props around the property. The styling needed to establish a consistent visual language while adapting to existing entrances, pathways, landscaped areas and covered spaces.

Evolution Prop Shop approached the residence as a sequence of themed areas, using different prop groupings to shift the atmosphere from playful seasonal styling at the entrance to darker graveyard and haunted walkthrough scenes elsewhere within the property.

Creative Styling Approach

The creative approach relied on layering props, textures and atmospheric details rather than allowing individual pieces to stand alone.

At the entrance, Jack-O-Lanterns were arranged at different heights across rustic timber crates, accompanied by pumpkins, illuminated candles, Halloween signage and smaller decorative accessories. Elsewhere, the treatment became deliberately more sinister. Gravestones, a tall distressed graveyard monument, a Grim Reaper, black draped elements and candle lanterns formed a cemetery-inspired setting, while apocalyptic theme panels, wall panels with drop cloths, creeping foliage and distressed set dressing created the visual framework for the haunted walkthrough.

Props and Decorative Features

Warning and danger signs, chains, spiders, creeping foliage, moss treatments, candles, lanterns, rustic crates and dark draped props were positioned around the principal features to remove visual gaps and make each scene feel deliberately styled.

Working within an operational hotel and a restricted installation programme, the Prop Shop team coordinated the themed elements to create a cohesive environment that extended from the entrance through to the main lounge areas.

The Challenge

Transforming an existing hotel bar into a convincing fantasy setting required the Prop Shop team to introduce a substantial volume of themed material without losing the identity of the overall concept.

The installation also presented practical challenges. Large props had to be transported through limited lift access shared with hotel service staff, while the available installation window was tight. The team therefore prepared as much as possible in advance and arrived early on site, helping to reduce assembly requirements within the venue and allowing the larger decorative elements to be positioned efficiently.

Creative Styling Approach

The creative direction centred on building an enchanted woodland through layers rather than relying on a single statement feature.

Tall tropical foliage and trees established height and enclosed sections of the interior, while moss, bark, grasses, textured botanical forms and pale decorative rocks created detail closer to floor level. Coloured lighting introduced green, blue and purple tones through the planting, giving the foliage additional depth and strengthening the fantasy character of the environment.

A white decorative bridge framed with trailing greenery extended the woodland treatment through a circulation route, creating a visual transition between different areas of the installation.

Together, these elements allowed the concept to operate at several scales, from the oversized dragon and illuminated lettering to the smaller accessories encountered throughout the space.

The Challenge

The creative challenge was to establish a recognisable post-apocalyptic environment within an existing cinema setting without relying on a single statement feature. Instead, the transformation depended on multiple layers of props, surface treatments, environmental dressing and smaller details working together.

The entrance was particularly important. It needed to immediately shift the visual character of the venue, using distressed materials and themed decorative elements to create a convincing transition into the world of the series.

Creative Styling Approach

Evolution Prop Shop approached the environment through layered distressing and controlled visual disorder. Rather than presenting the decorative elements as individual props, materials were grouped and positioned to suggest an environment that had naturally deteriorated over time.

Corrugated surfaces were aged and weathered, while construction barriers, oil drums and other industrial-style pieces reinforced the abandoned aesthetic. Fake blood work and stencil treatments introduced further narrative detail, with foliage helping communicate the sense of nature beginning to reclaim the built environment.

Fabric draping, distressed finishes and deliberately irregular arrangements added depth to the styling, preventing the installation from appearing overly polished or theatrical.

A substantial part of the Prop Shop scope centred on the event entrance, where fabricated and decorative elements were combined into a layered post-apocalyptic composition.

The entrance treatment incorporated 2 m x 2 m corrugated wall sections, constructed barriers with aged and weathered finishes, fake blood detailing and stencilled event branding and hashtags. An entrance and shadow-box scenic treatment provided additional visual depth, supported by weathered oil drums and lanterns.

Five bagged-body props were also included within the confirmed scope, adding another unsettling detail appropriate to the creative direction.

Across the wider event décor, Evolution Prop Shop provided additional themed dressing, including 15 aged kerosene lanterns, 20 apocalyptic decorative items and foliage used to dress the space. The photographs show these elements working alongside distressed drapery, industrial textures and scattered decorative details to maintain a consistent visual language.

The completed installation transformed sections of Roxy Cinema through a deliberately distressed combination of industrial materials, weathered props, foliage and graphic detailing.

With only three hours available between events, the project also required carefully coordinated installation and precise handling of several large-format props within restricted access conditions.

The Challenge

The creative direction called for recognisable Hollywood imagery without relying on a single decorative feature to establish the theme. Instead, the ballroom needed a collection of props that could work together to create a cohesive cinematic environment, beginning with the entrance and continuing into the main event space.

Installation presented an additional challenge. Large illuminated arches and oversized decorative pieces had to be positioned through restricted venue access, while the entire transformation needed to be completed within a three-hour window between events.

This made sequencing particularly important. Each element needed to arrive, move through the venue and be positioned efficiently so that the complete decorative installation could be delivered within the available timeframe.

CREATIVE STYLING APPROACH

Evolution Prop Shop approached the styling as a visual journey inspired by classic cinema and Hollywood awards culture.

The arrival route became one of the strongest features of the installation. Repeated illuminated arches formed a theatrical tunnel over the red carpet, creating depth and immediately establishing the Hollywood theme. Illuminated poster frames were positioned along the route, while gold stanchions and red velvet ropes reinforced the red-carpet aesthetic.

Beyond the entrance, oversized cinema props extended the theme throughout the venue. A large clapperboard, film reel with trailing filmstrip and director's chair introduced instantly recognisable filmmaking references, while the awards-inspired figure positioned on the main stage provided a statement feature within the ballroom.

Rather than treating the props as isolated decorative pieces, their placement allowed the Hollywood visual language to continue from the entrance through to the principal event space.

PROPS AND DECORATIVE FEATURES
